FROM JAKARTA TO NUSANTARA: How Media Shape Public Views on Indonesia’s Capital Relocation
Abstract
The relocation of Indonesia’s capital from Jakarta to Nusantara in East Kalimantan represents one of the nation’s most ambitious development projects, sparking intense debate among policymakers, academics, and the public. Mass media coverage has highlighted diverse dimensions of this move—ranging from economic opportunities and environmental challenges to potential social transformations. Beyond informing audiences, media strategically frame these issues, influencing how the public perceives and evaluates the policy. Guided by agenda-setting theory, this study examines reporting from leading Indonesian media outlets to explore how coverage directs public attention toward specific concerns. Findings reveal that media play a pivotal role in amplifying narratives about economic benefits and environmental risks, thereby shaping collective opinion. The study underscores the media’s dual function as both an information source and an active agent in constructing public discourse, with implications for policy communication and democratic engagement.
