Police Communication Strategy in Combating Hoaxes

Abstract


This article examines the communication strategy of the Central Jakarta Metro Police (Polres Jakpus) in its campaign to eliminate hoaxes and create a sense of security in the community. This research was conducted in Jakarta for three months, from June to August 2018. Using a qualitative case study approach, primary data are collected through interviews and observations, and secondary data are collected through document searches of books, journals, and other internet sources. The results showed that the communication strategy carried out by the Polres Jakpus in an anti-hoax campaign highlighted the preventive actions conducted by the Sat Binmas through the Bhabinkamtibmas. Bhabinkamtibmas' appeals and socialization were marked by posters, leaflets, banners, and door-to-door visits to people's homes. Polres Jakpus Public Relations also carried out the campaign through exciting social media content, encouraging people not to trust news that may not be true and to share only verified news. The activity also included socializing about criminal law for a hoax spreader.
