SELF-CENSORSHIP MODEL IN REPORTING ON SEXUAL CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN

Abstract

The 2014 sexual assault case at the Jakarta International School (JIS) served as a critical turning point for Indonesian media, highlighting the profound ethical challenges inherent in reporting on sensitive crimes involving minors. This study investigates the mechanisms of self-censorship as a vital ethical safeguard in digital journalism. Grounded in the Social Responsibility Theory of the Press, the research aims to identify the factors influencing coverage of sexual crimes against children, evaluate the practical application of self-censorship on Detik.com and Merdeka.com, and examine how these practices align with the Indonesian Journalistic Code of Ethics. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, the study utilized in-depth interviews with editorial stakeholders to unpack the decision-making processes behind the newsroom walls. The findings reveal that effective self-censorship is driven by three primary factors: the absolute protection of the victim’s identity (encompassing names, addresses, school affiliation, and social circles), the calibration of narrative style, and the modulation of the news tone to avoid sensationalism. The analysis demonstrates that both Detik.com and Merdeka.com generally upheld the principles of self-censorship during the JIS coverage, adhering to the mandates of the Journalistic Code of Ethics, particularly those regarding the dignity of victims and the avoidance of vulgarity. However, the study highlights that in the high-speed environment of online media, self-censorship functions as a complex negotiation between the public's right to know and the moral imperative to protect the vulnerable. The research concludes that self-censorship is not merely a restrictive act, but a proactive ethical commitment that preserves the media's legitimacy as a socially responsible institution. These findings provide a conceptual model for newsrooms to navigate the tension between digital "virality" and ethical integrity in reporting child-related crimes.
