ACADEMIC BRANDING: Individual and Institutional Perspectives

Bambang Sukma Wijaya

Abstract

Branding has transcended its commercial origins to become a pervasive force across nearly every facet of communal labor, including the hallowed halls of academia. As the global educational landscape grapples with intensifying competition, the necessity for strategic branding has shifted from a peripheral concern to a critical imperative. This article provides a comprehensive examination of branding mechanisms in the academic sphere, investigating its dual role in navigating a marketplace that increasingly demands visible prestige and measurable impact. Through qualitative inquiry involving in-depth interviews with academic actors and diverse stakeholders, this study constructs and examines the dimensions of "Academic Branding" from two distinct yet symbiotic perspectives: the individual and the institutional. At the individual level, academic branding is crystallized through a scholar's scientific profile, the visibility of their scholarly activities, the rigor of their published works, and the formal recognition and achievements that define their professional standing. Conversely, from an institutional standpoint, branding is embodied in the collective portfolio of research output, educational excellence, the efficacy of community service initiatives, and institutional collaboration. The findings underscore that academic branding is not merely a superficial exercise in image-making; rather, it is a fundamental driver of organizational reputation and credibility. The study reveals a recursive relationship in which the branding performance of individual scholars reinforces the prestige of the institution where they are ensconced, and vice versa. This research provides a conceptual framework for understanding how branding contributes to the sustainability of educational organizations and to the personal trajectories of scholars in an age where academic merit must be matched by strategic visibility.
